How to Find Most Searched Keywords Online for Hubs

We all want more traffic on our hub pages. Most people know about getting links and many people know about optimizing content by sprinkling in your keywords but too many of us skip the all important first step...finding the right keywords. This means your job is to find the most searched keywords for whatever topic you want to write about...but it does not really stop there.

Traffic that Pays Comes from Search Engines

First a word about keywords and traffic because not all traffic is equal. If you get into bookmarking, you can generate tons of traffic, but what good is it. If they don't click on your ads here in the Hub Pages you won't get paid. Interested parties looking for information come from search engines. They have the curiosity to click ads. This means not all traffic is equal. Keep that in mind as we move along because I believe that organic search traffic will yield the highest payoff type of traffic.

Finding Most Searched Keywords Related to Your topic

I like to write what's on my mind. Doing so is a great vent but it doesn't pay so well. This has been a challenge for me because I prefer just to write about what I want. While perusing other hubs I came across one from about Increasing Traffic: Adding the right Links (Thanks Rebecca E!) I loved the topic and and the article but it got me thinking, if you have good incoming links to a keyword that nobody searches what good does it do. Remember my premise is that organic search traffic pays the best.

So I looked into keyword research and here's what I found. There are tons of tools and ideas on keyword research. The simplest approach that makes the most sense to me is to use the good old supply and demand theory of economics. You want to find a topic/keyword that has high demand and low supply. The best free tools to do that seem to be word tracker and just a simple Google search.

Finding the Demand for your Keyword

I took the free version of wordtracker to give me keyword suggestions for this article. Wordtracker gives you a search volume for a keyword. I started with the main keyword..."keyword".

I looked at all kinds of variations of the word keyword like, keyword strategy, keyword selection, keyword optimization and more. It took about 30 minutes to get a short list (~20) of terms that had reasonable traffic volume (more than 100). These are arbitrary numbers but we will refine them later. This is the demand side of the equation.

Finding the Supply Side of Your Keywords

To find how many other web pages have your exact phrase, I went to google. I did a google search using the allintitle: tag with my keywords. This is loosely defined as my competition for the keyword because this shows me the number of web pages indexed by Google that have all the words in their title. Since the title is one of the places google looks to understand what a web page is about, it makes sense to find out how many pages are going to be competing with me for this keyword.

I then took the ratio of supply and demand and multiplied it by 1000. The result was as follows:

Well as you can see if you look at the demand/supply ratio, the keyword "most searched keywords" is a good topic for me to write on...so that's what I did. Now since I believe I have given some good content and Hub Pages has a pretty good reputation in Google, this article should be indexed fairly quickly...and well, I'm not cashing my check yet but I hope it will lead to more lucrative traffic.
