Strategies for More Search Engine Traffic
We all want more traffic on our hub pages. Most people know about getting links and many people know about optimizing content by sprinkling in your keywords but too many of us skip the all important first step...finding the right keywords. This means your job is to find the most searched keywords for whatever topic you want to write about...but it does not really stop there.
Traffic that Pays Comes from Search Engines
First a word about keywords and traffic because not all traffic is equal. If you get into bookmarking, you can generate tons of traffic, but what good is it. If they don't click on your ads here in the Hub Pages you won't get paid. Interested parties looking for information come from search engines. They have the curiosity to click ads. This means not all traffic is equal. Keep that in mind as we move along because I believe that organic search traffic will yield the highest payoff type of traffic.
Finding Most Searched Keywords Related to Your topic
I like to write what's on my mind. Doing so is a great vent but it doesn't pay so well. This has been a challenge for me because I prefer just to write about what I want. While perusing other hubs I came across one from about Increasing Traffic: Adding the right Links (Thanks Rebecca E!) I loved the topic and and the article but it got me thinking, if you have good incoming links to a keyword that nobody searches what good does it do. Remember my premise is that organic search traffic pays the best.
So I looked into keyword research and here's what I found. There are tons of tools and ideas on keyword research. The simplest approach that makes the most sense to me is to use the good old supply and demand theory of economics. You want to find a topic/keyword that has high demand and low supply. The best free tools to do that seem to be word tracker and just a simple Google search.
Finding the Demand for your Keyword
I took the free version of wordtracker to give me keyword suggestions for this article. Wordtracker gives you a search volume for a keyword. I started with the main keyword..."keyword".
I looked at all kinds of variations of the word keyword like, keyword strategy, keyword selection, keyword optimization and more. It took about 30 minutes to get a short list (~20) of terms that had reasonable traffic volume (more than 100). These are arbitrary numbers but we will refine them later. This is the demand side of the equation.
Finding the Supply Side of Your Keywords
To find how many other web pages have your exact phrase, I went to google. I did a google search using the allintitle: tag with my keywords. This is loosely defined as my competition for the keyword because this shows me the number of web pages indexed by Google that have all the words in their title. Since the title is one of the places google looks to understand what a web page is about, it makes sense to find out how many pages are going to be competing with me for this keyword.
I then took the ratio of supply and demand and multiplied it by 1000. The result was as follows:
Keyword Demand/Supply Ratio
Keyword
| Demand
| Supply
| Ratio x 1000

|---|---|---|---|

Conclusions about how to find most searched keywords
Well as you can see if you look at the demand/supply ratio, the keyword "most searched keywords" is a good topic for me to write on...so that's what I did. Now since I believe I have given some good content and Hub Pages has a pretty good reputation in Google, this article should be indexed fairly quickly...and well, I'm not cashing my check yet but I hope it will lead to more lucrative traffic.
Stay tuned for the follow up post in a few weeks. I'll let you know.

Thanks TinaMarieTad. Yes I too have to slow down and instead of just writing, try to write a little smarter.
I like how you did your research about the supply and demand. Hubpages new tool on keywords will aid tremendously. I may write some Hubs using the phrases in the keyword tools as titles.
Thanks Don. I'll have to check out that tool on hub pages. I'm always open to new and better ideas!
Hi Tom T, sound advice, agree totally with you about organic traffic. Good, clear advice - I've bookmarked for a friend.
Jamiehousehusband - Glad to help. Thanks for stopping by.
Very interesting! I use keywordtracker for the demand side but I have never looked into the supply side. You've given me some useful information here and I thank you!
James my friend, glad to help. I've just hit #6 with that keyword phrase though it is my update hub which has the same keyword that is #6. I'm still playing with the method but I'll be sure to send an update if I find a better way.
Great info Tom. Thanks for this.

Festersporling1 - No problem. If I find something better I'll put it up.

Lamme, it does help. I am seeing a bit more traffic from search engines on my later hubs. Haven't hit the mother lode yet but I'm still working on it!
Good news, I have found that it works to look around for niches in your local area as well as television programs, because most likely people will be searching for the information they see off line.
Research Analyst - That's a great point. Once you find those niche's then look for the right keywords, write an article and off you go. Sounds like a terrific plan. Thanks for sharing.
Keyword research can be a tough task you know, i wish i could go back into the past when google was dumb ... anyways, really informative hub.
I like the way you have explained all this simply. Doesn't Wordtracker give the search index the ratio you have calculated? I thought they give it but for a limited number of words in the free trial.
Great hub! I too am struggling very hard to get that first magic click.
Thanks!
@sun pen 50 - Glad to help. I've also found the tool for Seobook.com very helpful as well in gauging demand. Keep working and I'll give you a tip, review products you like. If you like them, others will be interested in what you say.

Hello Tom..what a useful and informative Hub. I try to include keywords in my writing, and sometimes I am successful at it and other times, I get carried away on what I am writing and forget to keyword optimise my article. Your article gave me insight in how to pick the best keywords to increase traffic to my Hubs..thank you!
