Homemade Birthday Gifts & Presents

Birthday Treasures

OK I'm not a terribly sentimental person so I probably am not the best candidate for something like homemade birthday gifts. Here comes the however...however, one of the most memorable and treasured gifts I have is a homemade gift I received on my 16th birthday.

What was the Gift? Well you'll have to wait until the end. The point was that it was something homemade and personal that made it special. I know I had some wonderful presents and birthday gifts growing up... problem is I don't exactly remember many of them 30 or 40 years later. What I do remember were the personal touches.

Another example is when I was about 14 or 15, it was my birthday, and I heard the doorbell ring. I ran down to the door and opened it just in time to see my Grandfather driving away with my Great Uncle and Aunt. The had done the ding dong dash to me leaving me a birthday card. As they drove away the honked the horn and waved. They left me with a card and a check for like $10 or something. It wasn't the check, it wasn't the card, it was that my grandfather took the time out to drive 25 miles and do the ding dong dash on my for my birthday. It was the personal touch.

Now for the Gift

When I was 16 my mom gave me a book with a bunch of stuff about me growing up. It had a birth certificate, clippings from my first haircut. Pictures of me at different ages. Cutouts of newspaper articles with my name in it. Report cards from different grades. You get the idea. Now I'm a 16 year old boy trying to learn to be a man and being tough. This gift really got to me.

Through the years I bring it out to show my family, show my kids to prove I was a kid too. I have brought it out when I'm feeling a little down and it cheers me up. To this day and I'm in my late 40's I still get it out once or twice a year. It is one of the few things that I now where it is and can go find it whenever I want. Now that's a home made gift!

Summing It Up

Whatever you make for a birthday gift, be sure there is something personal. I have give you a couple of examples of memorable gifts given to me. Now I now it takes a little extra effort but I hope you can see the impact some of these have had on me over a long period of time. Don't you want your gifts to make an impression and last a long time? Try making a homemade birthday gift that has a personal touch...it will make a lasting impression.

Hi Tom

I am sentimental (and I think you are too but as you're a man you think you shouldn't be!!) and presents given with thought and love out rank any expensive baubles and bangles.

Thanks Amber. Don't tell anyone about the sentimental thing. Wouldn't want the secret to get out. The funny thing is over time, you appreciate the thought gifts far more than the other things...most of which get lost, broke, or you just plain forget who gave them to you. Thanks for stopping by.

Homemade with thought behind it is a huge aphrodisiac for me. Jewelry with precious stones and an armful of store bought flowers, not so much. Give me pasta made from scratch or write me a smarmy love song, oh baby.
